Monday is the deadline that the Jail Investigation Team and the Inside/Outside Alliance have set for the commission to grant access to the jail for the investigation, and the commission hasn't replied.

More info from the Jail Investigation Team and the Inside/Outside Alliance:

The conditions inside the Durham County Detention Center and the inaction by those in charge are morally reprehensible and go against who we are as a community! It is critical that public officials hear from us NOW as we demand access to inspect conditions inside the jail.

The Durham County Jail Investigation Team issued a January 11, 2016, deadline to be let inside the jail to conduct in-person visits to at least 100 inmates. The response from both the County Commissioners and Sheriff Michael Andrews has been completely inadequate and it is clear that they wish to silence us. On Monday, we will show that we do not intend to go quietly and we have a strong community backing our efforts. ON MONDAY JANUARY 11, PLEASE JOIN US IN FLOODING CHAIRMAN MICHAEL PAGE AND SHERIFF ANDREWS' PHONELINES WITH OUR CONCERNS!

Here's how you can get involved:
Call in and let Durham County officials know that WE BELIEVE PRISONERS.

County Board of Commissioners Chairman Michael Page

Sheriff Michael Andrews

SAMPLE CALL-IN SCRIPT

“My name is ________ and I am a representative of _____ (organization/congregation/group). I am invested in the Durham community and care deeply about its residents and affairs.

I am calling today because I believe prisoners. I believe their complaints of poor nutrition, unsanitary conditions, and exploitative fees. I believe their reports of suicide attempts and medical neglect. I believe their accounts of racism and religious discrimination. I believe their stories of disappeared mail, C.O. retaliation, and sexual harassment.

I am calling to demand that you grant the community-based Durham County Jail Investigation Team immediate access to the Durham County Detention Center. I trust the Durham Jail Investigation Team to conduct surveys with prisoners, review financial records of private enterprises, and inspect the living conditions inside the jail. The January 11th deadline is today and I urge you to comply with the Jail Investigation Team’s demand to be let in immediately. The negligence and terror must end now!”

*We strongly urge everyone to call into Michael Page and Sheriff Andrews' office but recognize that this might not be possible for some. In lieu of phonecalls, both parties can be reached via email: *

SAMPLE EMAIL SCRIPT

My name is _________ and am a representative of ______ (organization/congregation/group). I/we do work in and around Durham centered on ___________________. I/we are invested in this community and care deeply about its residents and affairs.

I am writing today because I believe prisoners. Because I believe prisoners, I am demanding that you grant the independent, community-based Durham Jail Investigation Team immediate access to the Durham County Detention Center. A one-time investigation performed by the National Institute of Corrections is inadequate in addressing the widespread abuse and mistreatment occurring daily inside the jail. I trust the Durham Jail Investigation Team to conduct thorough and ongoing surveys with prisoners, review financial records of private enterprises, inspect the living conditions inside the jail, and create a better environment for those locked up. The January 11th deadline is today and I urge you to comply with the Jail Investigation Team’s demands to be let inside immediately. The negligence and terror must end now!
